Simple past to talk about finished situations that happened in the near or distant past para hablar de situaciones finalizadas que sucedieron en un pasado cercano o distante

Simple present  to describe routines and habits or to make a story more vivid para describir rutinas o habitos o hacer una historia mas vivida

Present continuous to describe situations happening at the moment of speaking para describer situaciones que estan sucediendo en el momento de hablar

Examples:

Halloween celebrations began about two thousands years ago  = Simple past

I always celebrate Halloween with my friends  =  simple present

Right now, we are organising a fancy dress party = present continuous
